Résumé

In many of today's top companies, the hierarchy of control is being relaxed. More autonomous working and self-direction is becoming common practice. This approach to achieving results has many benefits; it also presents new and uncomfortable challenges.

People, who for years have been directed in their activities, now have choice. Managers, who for years have got things done through direction, now have to gain commitment and lead others. Field trainers who had monitored the sales story, now have to coach their peers, therefore the attitude, skills and know how to manage these new challenges has to be learnt.

This learning can be by trial and error, however only the largest companies can risk the potential performance dip as this process grinds on. The learning curve can also be accelerated by utilising the learning of other companies and acquiring the skills and thinking that the top performers already possess.
