Appraising for High Performance

Appraisal or Performance Review is used as a technique for motivating staff, identifying strengths and development needs, setting objectives, coaching for results and establishing career aspirations - in fact for a wide range of purposes.

It is hardly surprising that many appraisers and appraisees approach an appraisal discussion ill-prepared, in fear and without enthusiasm. The process for appraisal provides a focus on results that at the same time provides the opportunity to realise the purposes identified above.

This workshop is intended for managers, team leaders and specialists who will appraise staff through mentoring discussions. It is highly participative and participants will be encouraged to develop material for mentoring discussions they will conduct in the near future.

Objectives

The objectives of the workshop are:

  • To enable participants to define the mentoring process and the rules and guidelines of Performance Assessment
  • To provide participants with practical methods of defining Work Roles and Key Areas, establishing standards and measures of performance and/or effectiveness
  • To provide practice in setting and agreeing performance and other work objectives with subordinates and conducting a mentoring discussion

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the workshop, participants will:

  • Understand the purpose of Performance Review
  • Identify the criteria, objectives and standards against which appraisals are to be set and relate individual targets and goals to organisational objectives
  • Have learned the importance of preparation to successful mentoring discussions
  • Have practiced the skills of appraisal discussions by establishing a constructive climate, use of appropriate questioning techniques and encouraging self appraisal
  • Be able to evaluate the outcomes arising from the mentoring discussion and develop mutually agreed action plans
